HIKING & TREKKING

One of the best things I have ever done, I loved the challenge and the scenery was spectacular, particularly on day 2. The food was excellent, very nutritious, the cook, porters and horseman very helpful and cheerful. Marco was a very knowledgeable, helpful guide and there no question he could not answer.
Jacqueline Shnier – Lares trek hiker

Greta Trip! Excellent guides, great service, cook, porters and assistants. Felt very safe at all times – really enjoyed the whole experience.

Hiking and Trekking

These are outdoor activities which consists of walking in natural environments, often on hiking trails. Hikers often seek beautiful natural environments in which to hike. These environments are often fragile: hikers may accidentally destroy the environment that they enjoy. While the action of an individual may not strongly affect the environment, the mass effect of a large number of hikers can degrade the environment.
Generally, protected areas such as parks have regulations in place to protect the environment. If hikers follow such regulations, their impact can be minimized. Such regulations include forbidding wood fires, restricting camping to established camp sites, disposing or packing out fecal matter, imposing a quota on the number of hikers per mile.
Many hikers espouse the philosophy of Leave No Trace: Followers of this practice follow strict practices on dealing with food waste, food packaging, and alterations to the surrounding environment. To prevent adverse impact, hikers should learn the habits and habitats of endangered species.
In the Andes Llamas have been used by people of the Andes mountains as pack animals for hundreds of years. Recently, it has become popular to use llamas as pack animals while hiking and trekking.

Reduce the environmental impact:

  1. Be aware of what happens to your garbage. Pack biodegradable soaps and shampoos. Remember that in some areas supplies of water and electricity are under stress and try to be economical with these resources.
  2. Help protect local flora and fauna by sticking to regulations (remaining on footpaths, not disturbing wildlife, not buying products made from endangered species, etc).
  3. There is very little recycling in Peru; try to reduce your consumption of plastic packaged foods and drinks (you might choose to bring a water bottle filter with you).
  4. Use rechargeable batteries
  • The natural environment is also very important. If in the bush we need to make our human waste, be sure is buried away from waterways. Burying or carrying out used toilet paper is a must. Tampons and sanitary pads must also be taken out of the area and disposed of appropriately. Minimize use of soap or shampoos in rivers and lakes - your local guide will let you know when using soap is unsuitable.
  • When trekking, many travellers take an extra plastic bag to pick up any rubbish that they see to improve the area and for their own rubbish. Rubbish may have to be carried until a suitable disposal opportunity in the next town.
  • Please try and minimize the waste of plastic water bottles. Consider packing a water filter, water purification tablets or iodine to purify drinking water. At some of our hotels there are large water 'bubbler' dispensers where you can refill your bottle with purified water for free or for a small fee.
